Online baccarat: rules and payout differences — 2026

In Baccarat, players place bets on either the Player, Banker, or a Tie. The dealer then deals two cards to both hands. The hand closest to a total of 9 wins. A third card may be drawn according to set rules. The card values are simple: Aces = 1 point. 2-9 = Face value. 10s, Jacks, Queens, Kings = 0 points.
If the total of a hand is 10 or more, the second digit is used. For example, a 7 and a 5 would be worth 2 (12 drops the 1).

House edge depends on deck count, commission and payout rules. In conventional commission baccarat, Banker and Player bets have a lower house edge than an 8-to-1 Tie bet, but neither guarantees a profit. Check the specific variant rather than applying one set of percentages to every game.

An 8-to-1 Tie bet generally has a higher house edge than standard Banker or Player bets. Different payouts and rules change the comparison; a large headline payout does not establish good value.

In most Baccarat games, a 5% commission is deducted from your winnings on the Banker bet. While the Banker bet has a lower house edge and is generally the best bet, the commission ensures the casino maintains its edge over time. For instance, if you win a $100 Banker bet, you would receive $95 after the commission.

Yes! Baccarat is available at online casinos, where you can play both digital baccarat (software-based) and live dealer baccarat (with real dealers via video streaming). Online casinos offer a variety of baccarat variants, such as Punto Banco, Mini Baccarat, Speed Baccarat, and Live Baccarat.

Live Dealer Baccarat offers an immersive experience where you play with a real human dealer in real-time via video streaming. Unlike digital baccarat, where the outcome is generated by an algorithm, Live Baccarat is managed by a dealer and streamed to your device. This version offers more interaction and mimics the atmosphere of a physical casino, making it highly popular with players seeking a more authentic experience.

While Baccarat is mostly a game of chance, some players attempt strategies like Martingale (doubling your bet after a loss) or Paroli (increasing your bet after a win). However, these strategies don't change the odds of the game and can increase your risks. It’s important to bet responsibly and within your limits.

Baccarat variants may change commissions, third-card rules and payouts. A no-commission label does not mean no house edge. For example, Super 6 variants commonly alter payment on a Banker total of six; consult the actual paytable rather than assuming a 6-to-1 payout.
